Asylum Applications in Europe Decline by 12% in 2024

News

Asylum applications across the EU, Norway, and Switzerland witnessed a significant decline in 2024, dropping by approximately 12% to around 1 million submissions. Germany remained the leading destination for asylum seekers; however, it too saw a noticeable reduction in the number of applications compared to previous years. This trend reflects evolving migration patterns and potentially changing political, economic, and social conditions in both host countries and regions of origin. The reduction may also indicate the impact of tightened immigration policies and enhanced border controls implemented by several European countries in recent years.
