Jiangsu Province has achieved a significant milestone in its power generation capabilities, surpassing 200 million kilowatts in installed capacity, reaching a total of 204.093 million kilowatts, a 14.1% increase year-on-year. This growth in power generation capacity is integral to supporting the province’s robust economic performance, with its GDP projected to reach 13.7 trillion yuan in 2024, marking a 5.8% increase.
According to State Grid Jiangsu Electric Power Co., Ltd., the province has consistently ranked first in the country for four consecutive years in the manufacturing high-quality development index. This is largely attributed to the booming electric vehicle, lithium battery, and photovoltaic product industries, which have seen significant advancements in 2024. Annual electricity consumption in these sectors rose by 12.5%, 20.1%, and 7.4% respectively, highlighting the increasing demand for energy driven by manufacturing.
As Jiangsu continues its rapid industrial development, especially in manufacturing, its energy demand has similarly grown. In response, the province’s installed power generation capacity has expanded to meet these rising needs. Gao Zhengping, deputy director of the Development Planning Department at State Grid Jiangsu, emphasized that the growth in power generation has been essential in supporting the province’s economic development, ensuring a stable and reliable electricity supply for various industries.
Currently, Jiangsu boasts 14 national-level advanced manufacturing clusters, including one focused on large aircraft production. The Zhenjiang Aerospace Industrial Park, which houses 26 aviation-related enterprises, exemplifies how energy infrastructure is fueling industrial growth. In 2024, the park achieved an impressive 50 billion yuan in sales, marking a 15% increase year-on-year, and saw its electricity consumption rise by 12% to 22.54 million kWh.
Looking to the future, Jiangsu aims to further expand its power generation capacity through the installation of new energy sources. Gao Zhengping outlined plans to accelerate the development of wind power and photovoltaic energy, alongside the implementation of the fifth DC ultra-high voltage transmission project, which will help channel electricity to Jiangsu from other regions. These efforts are part of the province’s strategy to build a new power system that supports its growing energy demands while transitioning to more sustainable energy sources.
This proactive approach to power generation and grid expansion ensures that Jiangsu remains a key player in China’s economic landscape, with energy infrastructure directly linked to its continued manufacturing success and technological advancements. The government’s commitment to meeting future energy demands and fostering industrial growth reflects the province’s determination to sustain its position as a leader in both economic and technological development.
